A TOP hip surgeon has joined a university's fundraising campaign.

Ronan Treacy, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, has joined the University of Worcester's Foundation Anniversaries Campaign, which was launched two weeks ago and has already raised £25,000.

The campaign is raising money for student scholarships and hardship funds.

Mr Treacy is known for his work in hip resurfacing and co-developing the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) technique.

He has been a fellow of the university since 2017 and has now been appointed as an honorary vice president of the campaign.

Mr Treacy said: "As a fellow of the University of Worcester, I’m fortunate to be invited to graduation ceremonies, and it’s noticeable when the students come up and receive their degrees, the wonderment of what they’re experiencing.

"You see all their hopes for the future, and what a wonderful achievement they’ve made, and they all come from different backgrounds.

"Some will have had an easier journey, but some will have had a very difficult journey, and it’s important to give them the best possible environment to make it the best possible journey for them."

The university's staff are already training for their Charity Challenge, which involves walking overnight, paddling the River Severn, pulling a tractor, and more activities, all within 24 hours.

Professor David Green CBE DL, vice chancellor and chief executive of the university, will devote two weeks of his summer to walking 280 kilometres along the coastal Camino Portugues, the historic pilgrim’s path from Porto in Portugal to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

Mr Treacy said: "280 kilometres is the equivalent of walking from Worcester to the Lake District, it’s an achievement I really want to support because I think we’re lucky to have David in Worcester."

Professor Green said: "Ronan was one of the very first of the generous donors to support this campaign for student scholarships and hardship funds.

"It is brilliant to have the support of one of the world’s very best surgeons for this vital campaign.

"We are all so grateful."
